NYOF on Oprah | In May 2002, NYOF’s President appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show to talk about the Indentured Daughters program. The Show was designed to coincide with United Nations Childrens Day and featured none other than the great Nelson Mandela. Oprah wanted to profile people and organizations that had helped children around the world, and she chose NYOF and three others from among the many projects from which she could have selected. Her main interest was in our Indentured Daughters program, and she kept exclaiming throughout the interview, “Ladies and Gentlemen, for $100 you can buy a piglet and save a girl!”
Since the program aired just before Mother’s Day, many donors made a contribution to honor their mothers or wives. Thanks to Oprah, NYOF was transformed into a national organization and many new donors and friends came into our lives.
