VivekVivek Dongol is six years old and from a remote area. His father, who was a farmhand, died in a car accident and the mother supports Vivek and a second child by selling milk from door to door. Vivek needed open heart surgery, at a cost of $1400 – a sum which it would have taken his mother decades to earn. Vivek had his surgery, and he is a healthy little boy since the operation.

Chisan DahalChisan Dahal, a 2 year old girl, is from one of the most remote areas of Nepal. She is an only child. Her parents are laborers who have no home of their own and no land. The mother works as a cook, and they live in a small room provided by their employer. The local hospital provided $20 for their journey to the Kathmandu heart hospital, where Chisan was operated on successfully. Her parents could contribute nothing and were unable to raise money from their community.

Susmita BistaSushmita Bista, a five year old girl, has no father. He abandoned the mother when she was pregnant, leaving her ill and severely depressed. They are supported by her elderly grandfather, who is a landless squatter and sells vegetables from a cart. They could not contribute anything to the surgery and could not raise money locally. The cost of the subsidy by NYOF for the surgery was $416.

Meena ChettriMeena Chettri, 19 years old, is an orphan. She was taken into the home of a kind but impoverished family, who raised her. Meena has been ill since childhood, and she required surgery to survive. Her foster parents are landless squatters and could not contribute to her care, but they managed to raise over $500 toward the cost of the surgery from individuals in the community and other organizations.
